RESEARCH ON MERIT AND METACOGNITION
MERIT is not only a clinical practice but also a growing research community. Our work focuses on metacognition, psychopathology, and psychotherapy processes and outcomes. Through collaboration and innovation, the MERIT Institute aims to advance the scientific evidence base for MERIT and deepen understanding of recovery in serious mental illness.

MERIT INSTITUTE RESEARCH COMMITTEE
The Research Committee extends the legacy of Dr. Paul Lysaker by promoting rigorous scientific inquiry into MERIT and metacognition. We support projects that explore metacognitive processes, their role in serious mental illness, and related psychotherapeutic outcomes.
Co-Chairs:
-
Kelsey Bonfils, PhD (University of North Carolina)
-
Kyle Minor, PhD (Indiana University-Indianapolis)

COLLABORATION AND RESEARCH SUPPORT
The Research Committee hosts monthly and quarterly meetings that bring together clinicians and researchers to collaborate, exchange ideas, and advance scientific discussion. In addition to fostering community, we also provide consultation for MERIT- or metacognition-related projects, including connecting potential collaborators, facilitating use of existing data, and supporting coding of metacognitive research interviews. If you’re interested in joining our meetings or seeking research support, we'd be excited to hear from you.
SUPPORTING EMERGING RESEARCH
The MERIT Institute funds the Paul Lysaker Metacognition Research Awards to promote innovative work on metacognition, MERIT, serious mental illness, and recovery. These awards provide support for small research projects and conference travel. The first awardees were announced in June 2025.
